ItappearsthatasubsidencetookplaceinthewatersoftheLakeofZurichintheyear1854,layingbareconsiderableportionsofitsbed。Theadjoiningproprietorsproceededtoenclosethenewland,andbeganbyerectingpermanentdykestopreventthereturnofthewaters。Whilecarryingontheworks,severalrowsofstakeswereexposed;andondiggingdown,thelabourersturnedupanumberofpiecesofcharredwood,stonesblackenedbyfire,utensils,bones,andotherarticles,showingthatatsomeremoteperiod,anumberofhumanbeingshadlivedoverthespot,indwellingssupportedbystakesdrivenintothebedofthelake。

TheseaboriginalSwisslake-dwellersseemtohavebeensucceededbyaraceofmenusingtools,implements,andornamentsofbronze。Insomeplacestheremainsofthisbronzeperioddirectlyoverlaythoseofthestoneperiod,showingthelattertohavebeenthemostancient;butinothers,thevillagesitesarealtogetherdistinct。Thearticleswithwhichthemetalimplementsareintermixed,showthatconsiderableprogresshadbeenmadeintheusefularts。Thepotter’swheelhadbeenintroduced。Agriculturehadbegun,andwildanimalshadgivenplacetotameones。Theabundanceofbronzealsoshowsthatcommercemusthaveexistedtoacertainextent;fortin,whichentersintoitscomposition,isacomparativelyraremetal,andmustnecessarilyhavebeenimportedfromotherEuropeancountries。
